In the wake of the Houston Astros signing veteran slugger Jose Abreu to a three-year contract, several fans of the St. Louis Cardinals have voiced their opinions and have made their desire for the team take some more initiative in the offseason very clear.
After the team was eliminated by the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Wild Card Series, President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak made it clear that the team would be targeting a catcher and would also be looking to increase its payroll.
However, four weeks into the offseason, St. Louis has remained idle.
On Twitter, one fan praised the Astros front office for remaining hungry to win, even after a World Series title and suggested that the Cardinals take notes.
The Astros just won the World Series and are already an elite team. Despite this, they continue to improve their team and fill the very little holes they have. Talk about a front office hungry to win. The Cardinals should take some notes… #STLCards https://t.co/s9i4TU79hN

Cards Quiet To Start Offseason
With the Winter Meetings approaching, the Cardinals are sure to be more active in the coming weeks.
Still, this fan is correct in pointing out that the Cardinals should take notice of how the Astros are operating.
The team does not have to wait until the Winter Meetings begin to start the process of building their 2023 roster.
The Cardinals have also been relatively quiet in recent offseasons, with their biggest acquisition last winter being the signing of left-hander Steven Matz.
St. Louis competes in the postseason almost yearly, but they have not gotten past the Wild Card round since 2019 and are now 10 years removed from their 2013 National League pennant.
Simply getting to the postseason isn’t going to be enough to satisfy the fanbase, and if the Cardinals want to compete with teams such as the Astros, the Los Angeles Dodgers, or Atlanta Braves, they’ll need to make some impactful moves this winter.
