With just over a week to go before Opening Day, the St. Louis Cardinals still have some questions to answer when concerning their roster.

Certain position battles are still taking place, as well as competition for spots in the bullpen.

With pitchers such as Jake Woodford, Andre Pallante, Matthew Liberatore, Zack Thompson, and Andrew Suarez, there are a lot of things still up in the air for St. Louis.

Woodford is a pitcher who has proven time and again that he deserves a spot in the Cardinals bullpen.

He’s also made a few spot starts and performed quite well.

On Twitter, Cardinals analyst Brandon Kiley vouched for Woodford and stated that the young right-hander deserves a spot on the roster.

Ultimately, it’s hard to argue against this case.

Unfortunately, Woodford has received some bad luck and has been sent back and forth between Memphis and St. Louis.

The 26-year-old appeared in 27 games last season for the Cardinals and made a spot start against the Chicago Cubs on August 23.

In those 27 games, Woodford went 4-0 with a 2.23 ERA and served as a long relief option for the Cardinals.

In his start against the Cubs, the right-hander pitched into the sixth inning and allowed just one run.

Spring training has been productive for him thus far, which ultimately bodes well for him in terms of claiming a roster spot.

The Cardinals have plenty of depth, but Woodford has emerged as a key option out of their bullpen and is somebody who can start when needed.
