The Minnesota Twins handed a three-year, $105.3 million contract to Carlos Correa last offseason, with opt-out clauses after each year.
The talented shortstop made use of his opt-out rights and is currently a free agent.
Looking for a mammoth contract last year, Correa couldn’t quite get it and ended up settling for a short, high-AAV deal with the Twins, but with the chance of re-entering the market after 2022.
Now that the conditions are normal, there is no lockout, and teams have a better grasp about how much money they can spend in free agency, Correa could potentially get the long-term deal he desires.
Last year, he was said to be looking for something in the neighborhood of $300 million.
While that might be a bit hard to accomplish, he could be very, very close to that.
His teammates on the Twins hope he decides to stay: barring the ugly September collapse, something good might be brewing in Minnesota if he stays.
Buxton Revealed Correa’s Intentions In Free Agency
The face of the franchise, Byron Buxton, discussed the situation.
“Byron Buxton got cleared to run today. On Correa he said, ‘I know what he wants to do. He knows what he wants to do. He wants to be here. It’s up to them to go get him,’” baseball blogger @tlschwerz tweeted.

Correa, who hit .291/.366/.467 with 22 round-trippers this year, has said himself that he would like to stay, but he wants the Twins to come through.
In other words, he would love for the Twins to be the highest bidders, but isn’t in the mood for hometown discounts or anything like that.
If they manage to retain Correa, the Twins might be contenders in 2023.
