2023 will mark the end of an era for the St. Louis Cardinals, as veteran right-hander and two-time World Series champion Adam Wainwright will be retiring at the end of the season.
He’ll pitch his final season without his longtime batterymate in Yadier Molina behind the plate.
But with Molina gone, Wainwright is trying a little something new.
While PitchCom is one of baseball’s newer features, he and Molina never really needed to use it, given their familiarity with each other.
But today, the veteran right-hander is trying PitchCom for the first time, which has a new feature that allows pitchers to call their own pitches.
John Denton posted a video of Wainwright experimenting with the device.
#STLCards RHP Adam Wainwright is utilizing a new@PitchCom_Sportsfeature: He’s calling his own pitches. Wainwright joked that if they had this feature last season that catcher Yadi Molina would have been constantly shaking him off. pic.twitter.com/nCNllLN8dG

Denton added a funny note in the caption of the tweet.
Wainwright reportedly joked that if the feature had been around last season, Molina would have been constantly shaking him off.
Fortunately, Wainwright won’t have to worry about disagreeing with his former batterymate this year.
Not having Molina will certainly be an adjustment for the three-time All-Star.
Molina had been the Cardinals everyday catcher since 2005.
He was behind the plate when Wainwright struck out Carlos Beltran to end the 2006 NLCS and when he recorded the final out of the World Series.
So naturally, things are going to be different.
Molina and Wainwright were always on the same page.
With the ability to call his own pitches, he may not have to shake off Willson Contreras at all this year.
The 41-year-old will start the team’s Grapefruit League opener on Saturday.
