On Thursday, three-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion Adam Wainwright took the St. Louis Cardinals and the rest of the baseball world by surprise when he stepped up to the microphone to sing the national anthem.
The 41-year-old is recovering from a groin injury he suffered during the World Baseball Classic.
The Cardinals initially planned on having him start Opening Day.
But even if he couldn’t pitch, he found a way to contribute and gave St. Louis fans yet another moment they’ll never forget.
On Friday, Wainwright took a moment to reflect on his singing of the anthem, thanking the fans in St. Louis for their support and expressing excitement for the 2023 season.

The veteran right-hander certainly took everybody by surprise.
But those in St. Louis know that he won’t be twiddling his thumbs in boredom after the season ends and he officially retires.
In fact, Wainwright has begun recording some country music songs and has seemingly lined up a second career.
Cardinals fans certainly enjoyed seeing their favorite veteran ace sing the anthem.
It’s also safe to say that nobody saw it coming.
But Wainwright is a man of many talents.
In addition to being one of the greatest players to ever wear the Birds on the Bat, having closed out four postseason series, the veteran right-hander is now an up-and-coming country artist.
Fortunately, he got a chance to participate in Opening Day and enjoyed every minute of it.
Now, he’ll look to help St. Louis win one more title before he retires.
