Yankees Have 2 Young Stars Getting Work In At Shortstop

The New York Yankees have said that Anthony Rizzo will play most nights at first base, with Gleyber Torres at second and Josh Donaldson at third.

DJ LeMahieu will give all three some rest in a rotational super-utility job in those three positions.

Shortstop, however, remains a mystery and will entirely depend on what happens in spring training.

The candidates to fill the position, in order of likelihood, are Oswald Peraza, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Anthony Volpe.

All four are in camp, competing for at-bats and trying to impress coaches and instructors.

Here is a clip of Cabrera and Peraza doing some shortstop work.

Peraza is the most likely to run away with the position.

He hit .306/.404/.429 with a home run and two steals in 18 games with the Yankees last year after homering 19 times and stealing 33 bases in Triple-A.

He is also the best defender of the group.

IKF has a very limited ceiling and is best suited as a backup, while Cabrera, who hit six homers and had a .740 OPS after being called up in August, is likely ticketed for a lot of outfield work.

Volpe is the best prospect of the group, but struggled a bit in Triple-A after taking some time to adjust in Double-A.

He may need a bit more seasoning in Scranton, the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate.

He might be ready for a call up in the second half, and has a chance to be a special player.

All things considered, Peraza is the favorite to get most of the playing time at the infield’s most important position.
