MLB’s New Rules Affecting Free Agency – USA Informing

MLB’s new rule changes are setting the game up to look different in 2023 and also affecting teams’ approach to free agency. With pitch clocks being implemented and defensive shifts being outlawed, these changes could be felt now and during the season.

Teams are building their rosters while taking into consideration the new changes. The pace of the game has been a big priority for MLB. These new rules are intended to address that and draw in younger fans. This is how the game may be affected by the new regulations on and off the field.

MLB’s New Rule Changes

Banning the shift will change MLB and how the game is strategized. First off, the batting average of .245 should increase as it was the fifth worst in history. There will be more opportunities for hits and runs with regular positioning. The ground ball rate will go up, and hopefully, strikeouts will go down. The shift was designed to turn hard-hit balls into outs.

They can’t push their infield onto the outfield grass to cover more ground. Also, that means that teams will be looking for elite defenders in the infield. They can no longer hide the lack of range by using the shift. MLB hopes to see more double plays, singles up the middle, and faster games with the new rules. Therefore adding some excitement to the game rather than a ball right at the defender.

The pitch clock rule could have an impact because of the time limit, as pitchers will have fifteen seconds to throw a pitch with bases empty and twenty with base runners on. Therefore, pitchers are going to have to be more efficient and adjust to a more traditional defense. These changes will be taken into consideration when teams look at free agents

New Rules Affecting Free Agency

As front offices shape their rosters for 2023, they are weighing the new rules. Also, they are trying to figure out how this could affect players. The changes may not nix interest in certain players, but teams may take a little more consideration before signing.

Therefore, teams will try to identify hitters with a profile that could benefit from the new shift ban. Some of these hitters are free agents or up for trades. Teams may find value in signing or trading for players who perform better without defensive shifts in their way. Also, it might put a premium on players with speed and strong defense.

So far, it’s been a slow start to the offseason, and it is unknown if new changes are the reason. There are some big names on the free agent market to watch as the market heats up. Stay tuned for more on MLB, news, and related storylines.
