The Milwaukee Brewers’ David Stearns announced on Thursday that he is stepping down from his position as president of baseball operations.
He had joined the Brewers as a general manager in 2015, and had built a successful squad that made the postseason several times.
For now, Stearns will remain in the organization as an advisor to ownership and the baseball operations department.
That is the plan for the moment, but every MLB organization is paying attention to his situation: for years, Stearns has been a hot commodity at the office level.
Many teams have wanted his services in the past, most notably the New York Mets when owner Steve Cohen was assembling his front office.
Does He Have A Future On Another Team?
The fact he will now be an advisor may mean he will transition out of the organization and look for greener pastures.
However, Stearns himself brought some peace of mind to Brewers fans:
David Stearns: “I am not going anywhere. I am going to be here in Milwaukee.”

For now, Matt Arnold will be in charge of baseball operations in Milwaukee.
Fans, as you would expect, reacted to the Stearns news on Twitter.
The majority of those who have followed baseball closely understand he is a valuable executive who may have a bright future and has already accomplished a lot.
David Stearns took a team that made the playoffs two times in my lifetime and turned them into a team that was always above .500 and in playoff contention. He did this alongside an owner who statistically ranked in the bottom 20% of payroll in the MLB. I did a great job here.

Congrats to now-former head of @Brewers baseball operations David Stearns. Always appreciated his honesty / candor from him during our weekly chats on @620wtmj. He crafted the best run in the club’s history and leaves it in good shape moving forward. He ca n’t ask for more than that. pic.twitter.com/HGT5is88jg

Others, however, think he is overrated:
David Stearns is overrated what the hell has he accomplished that’s so amazing? https://t.co/W6125J6peK

The Brewers have never won anything with David Stearns. This year they had a commanding division lead, they traded Hader and didn’t even make the oaky offs. I can’t imagine wanting him anywhere near my baseball team

Mets fans certainly wouldn’t mind having him on board:
Cohen sends a huge check to Milwaukee to get David Stearns? Yay or nay?

He may be staying with the Brewers for now, but this development actually opens up the possibility of him leaving at some point.
When that happens, the league will be all over him.
