Before the 2023 season began, there were high expectations regarding three playoff teams from the previous year: the New York Mets, the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres.

Well, things happen: injuries, suspensions, unexpected crashes and many other obstacles often get in the way.

Now none of those three MLB teams are ranked higher than fourth in their respective divisions.

The Mets are 36-45, fourth in the NL East and 17.5 games (!) behind the first-place Atlanta Braves.

The Cardinals are last in the Central with a 33-47 mark.

Meanwhile, the Padres are fourth in the NL West at 37-44.

To say that it has been a difficult year for all three organizations would be an understatement.

All three made considerable investments in the offseason to improve their rosters, particularly the Mets and Padres.

Now, a member of the MLB is seriously doubting his chances in this campaign.

The Washington Post’s Chelsea Janes thinks one or more of those three squads will eventually make things work, but acknowledges that it’s looking harder by the day.

They just keep piling up loss and heartbreak, and their followers are extremely frustrated.

They still have half a year to achieve the improbable, but it seems extremely difficult to achieve in all three cases.

The good thing about their prospects is that there are several wild card spots that can become more and more realistic as they start to rack up the profits.

But it’s hard not to agree that, based on the quality of their roster and payroll, all three franchises are underperforming this season.
