The New York Mets’ nightmare season continues.
They are 17-18 before opening play on Tuesday, they have a lengthy list of injured stars, and they are already seven games behind the Atlanta Braves for the NL East lead.
Things are starting to become really complicated for Buck Showalter’s men.
The latest roadblock in the Mets’ path is another injury for ace Max Scherzer, after already dealing with some shoulder discomfort in mid-April and having to miss 10 games because of a suspension.
Scherzer was scratched from Tuesday’s start with some neck discomfort.
Fans obviously reacted on Twitter upon learning that Scherzer wouldn’t make his scheduled Tuesday start.
However, no one is more disappointed than the pitcher himself:
“I haven’t pitched well this year. I want to get out there, want to get back on track and do it. I think that’s what the frustration is.”

The Mets are starting to lose ground in the race for the division, digging themselves into an early hole.
Injuries, however, have been too much to overcome.
They lost Edwin Diaz before the start of the season, and are also without Jose Quintana and Carlos Carrasco.
Justin Verlander missed the first month of the campaign, too.
Fans on Twitter are extremely disappointed to hear Scherzer will be out.

Max Scherzer has neck, back, and shoulder problems. Maybe the #mets should stop signing players that are closer to 40 than 30.

The pitcher insisted it won’t be a long-term absence, though.
For the season, Scherzer is 2-2 with a 5.56 ERA in 22.2 frames.
He hasn’t been good, but he has been pitching hurt, too.
If he regains full health, he can be a difference-maker for the Mets.
