Things aren’t humming along too well for the St. Louis Cardinals.
After being bounced from the playoffs by the Philadelphia Phillies last October, the defending NL Central champions have started off 3-7 and fallen to the cellar of the division.
On Monday, the team was dealt another tough blow against the Colorado Rockies, falling by a final of 7-4.
However, that seventh run may not have scored if the umpiring crew had gotten a crucial call right in the bottom of the seventh inning.
With the bases loaded, pitcher Drew VerHagen fielded a chopper back to the mound and fired home.
Catcher Willson Contreras kept his foot on the plate and also tagged Charlie Blackmon.
However, he was ruled safe and manager Oli Marmol was not allowed to challenge the play.
After the game, Contreras shared his thoughts on the play.
Contreras on the play at the plate in the seventh: “First off, I thought my foot was on the plate. Second was that I tagged him, but they never saw it. … If you watch the replay, he’s out.” #STLCards pic.twitter.com/8vpkhJ5YlB

Contreras expressed frustration with the umpires for getting the call wrong, stating that it was quite obvious as to why the runner was out.
The new Cards catcher said that he tried to explain to the umpires that he had put the tag on Blackmon, but that they had not seen him do so.
The 30-year-old said the reason he tagged Blackmon was because he knew VerHagen had to make a tough play to nab him at the plate.
He reiterated his point that he tried to tell the umpires that he made the tag, but that they replied by saying they hadn’t seen the play.
Contreras also continued to stress that if they had looked at the replay, Blackmon would have been out.
