The MLB free agency period is officially underway.
There are a bunch of big-named free agents who are expected to sign hefty contracts this offseason.
While most are deserving, there are always a few players that get overpaid.
Here are three MLB free agents who will most likely be overpaid this offseason.
1. Carlos Correa
This free agency class is headlined by shortstops, and Carlos Correa will be heavily sought after.
Correa deserves a big contract, but he should not be the highest-paid shortstop.
The 28-year-old has been defensively elite throughout his career, especially in 2021 when he brought home his first Gold Glove.
Things Scott Boras called his client and free agent Carlos Correa:
• the Dior of defense
• the Hermes of hitting
• the Louis V of leadership
• the Prada of the postseason pic.twitter.com/OR7V1ixJp5— B/R Walk-Off (@BRWalkoff) November 9, 2022
But, he has yet to have a dominant offensive season in his career.
He has never had a season with more than 30 home runs and he has only batted over .300 one time in eight seasons.
Also, he is a non-factor on the base paths as he has not stolen a base each of the last two seasons.
The one reason he will probably end up the highest-paid shortstop is due to his age.
But, if contracts were based on only production his would not be the most lucrative.
2.Justin Verlander
More than likely Justin Verlander is going to win the AL Cy Young when it is announced later this week.
So he can still perform at a high level like he did last year.
But, now he is looking to cash in as this will probably be the last big contract of his career.

Verlander will be 40 years old at the start of the next season.
Despite how well he pitched in 2021, teams should be careful paying a big price for someone 40+.
Some contending team that needs starting pitching will give Verlander any contract he wants.
This could be problematic as the right-hander enters the last few seasons of his career.
3.Kenley Jansen
Sometimes the MLB free agency period comes down to supply and demand.
That reason alone is why Kenley Jansen will get a big contract.
We already saw Robert Suarez and Rafael Montero get huge deals this offseason.
Neither of those players has accomplished what Jansen has in the Show.
Jansen is by far the best closest remaining in free agency.
Best Stuff+ of remaining relievers (min 25 innings):
1) Aroldis Chapman (still)
2) Kenley Jansen
3) Robert Suárez
4) Adam Ottavino
5) Joely Rodriguez
6) Pierce Johnson
7) David Robertson
8) Hirokazu Sawamura
9) Trevor May
10) Craig Kimbrell—Eno Sarris (@enosarris) November 8, 2022
So all the teams looking for a stud closer will come calling.
Jansen led the National League in saves last season with 41.
Despite being 35 years old, the three-time All-Star is in for another lucrative payday.
