Over the last couple of years, the San Francisco 49ers have traded away a number of draft picks in order to acquire quarterback Trey Lance and running back Christian McCaffrey.
Many are starting to second-guess the Lance deal, as he hasn’t played enough to give anyone a true read on what he can become, but the McCaffrey trade paid huge, immediate dividends for the team.
San Francisco will not have any picks in the first or second rounds of next month’s NFL Draft, but just received seven picks from the league as compensation for losing coaches and executives to other teams.
The #49ers received seven compensatory picks, including three third-rounders for losing minority coaches and executives to head coach and GM jobs. https://t.co/5xm233XfK2

The 49ers are coming off a trip to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles after starting QB Brock Purdy tore the UCL in his throwing elbow, snapping their 12-game winning streak.
Purdy is set to undergo surgery on Friday and may not be ready to start the 2023 season.
They don’t have a lot of needs, but they could use a few upgrades on defense, as well as on the right side of their offensive line.
Since the Niners don’t have a ton of salary cap space and are looking to give Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa a big contract extension, they may have to look to the draft for such improvements.
But there are also some decent free-agent edge rushers they could go after in order to give Bosa a partner up front who already has some experience.
